What are the symptoms of menopause in men?

Male menopause, or as it is medically known, andropause, is a time in a man’s life when their testosterone levels have become lower which can lead to symptoms. Some of these symptoms men will be able to recognize in themselves and some of the symptoms can be slow developing or at a point in time that a man may not notice that it is happening.

Some of the most common symptoms include a lower libido, potentially a lack of interest involving anything sexual, erectile dysfunction, and even an overall lack of energy for day-to-day things like going grocery shopping. Some men will also develop mood swings and depression which they could look over as being stress induced from their home situation or work, or if they have been having issues with their libido, they may contribute to that feeling they are having emotionally. It is important to see a physician when you start having these symptoms, or if a loved one has pointed out that they are concerned about you, as the sooner you learn you are in andropause the better the chance of being able to mitigate any negative impacts that can come along with andropause.

Other symptoms can develop in men as well the longer that their andropause goes unnoticed and untreated. Men can begin to develop more fat in the stomach area they never had previously, gynecomastia, which is known by the general population as ‘moobs’ or ‘man boobs’, loss overall muscle mass, and even decreasing bone density. Because these symptoms can affect personal feelings towards themselves, it can also affect their daily lives as they may not feel comfortable in situations they are used to and can also lead to a sense of depression and anxiety that can be worsened by the fact that low testosterone can make a person depressed.

What does andropause feel like?

Andropause can feel different for every man, just as menopause can affect women differently. Most commonly men will find they have a decline in libido that can either happen slowly over time or even abruptly. Because of the nature of andropause, some men may never experience it as their testosterone may always stay at what is considered to be a natural level even if it is lower than it was when they were younger. This is also what causes some contention among people when it comes to male menopause as some believe that it doesn’t exist, however, medical professionals do recognize that andropause is a real thing that affects men over the age of 30.

How to reverse male menopause?

Some symptoms of male menopause, or andropause, can be treated at home but it is extremely beneficial to see a physician during this time as they may be able to prescribe you medications like hormone therapies that you can use in conjunction with things you are doing yourself.

Men who are going through andropause have shown that doing certain things like weightlifting or strength training can help, as it has been shown to naturally cause the production of testosterone in men when they do so. Changing your diet to be low in sugars and high in proteins can also help with the natural production of testosterone, however, doing these things may not be enough if you have very low testosterone which is why it is still recommended to see a physician to find out where your levels are at, and monitor if there is any improvements from doing these things without hormone therapies.

What should a man do during menopause?

One of the biggest things that can help a man during these times is to talk with people in your life such as friends or your significant other about what you are experiencing and going through as it can help you feel less alone during this time and there is a chance someone you know could be going through the same thing. With male menopause you must be empathetic to yourself, don’t let the small effects that are happening allow you to view yourself negatively, as there can be other ways to improve things like your sex life if you are struggling with erectile dysfunction. You may find that being open and honest with your romantic partner or significant other can take a lot of pressure off yourself to be able to focus on improving your health.
